Lampwork Bead Making
A Unique Artform

Lampwork bead making results in extraordinary unique beads. The original beauty of handcrafted Lampwork beads is unparalled, making them desirable for those who want something unusual and a cut above the rest. You are unlikely to see Lampwork bead jewellery pieces on anyone else.

Lampwork beads are created by melting glass rods in a beautiful array of colours and patterns. Each is individually handcrafted and decorated in swirls, glass dots or raised metallic bumps, to create a truly awe-inspiring bead. Quality lampwork beads take time to create. They must be annealed and cooled slowly in a kiln for approximately 6 hours. Lampwork Beads are truly unique, in every sense of the word. No two beads are ever the same.

The cost involved for initial equipment set-up is quite expensive. It takes years to practise and perfect the technique of lampworking. For this reason, lampwork beads are more expensive than regular beads and can range in price from three dollars to ninety dollars a bead, depending on the craftmanship involved.

The Lampwork Bead Making Process

Traditionally, glass beads were formed by melting hot glass canes with a gas lamp. Today, glassblowing is performed using a small torch, rather than a gas lamp. Glass beads are made from glass rods that become pliable once heated. Italian Effetre and Vetrofond glass are commonly used for their strength.

Narrow rods of glass are slowly introduced under the flame tip of a gas burner torch and heated until molten. The liquid-like glass is wound around a thin mandrel. The mandrel size determines the size of the hole through the bead.

Glass flowers encased with clear glass create a Millefiori pattern (Italian for a thousand flowers). Quality Beads are annealed and slowly cooled in a kiln for 5-6 hours. This process prevents cracking and shattering later.

It is important to buy beads from a reputable artist. Mass-produced cheap glass beads often crack and can release dangerous chemicals. Support the efforts of local lamp workers to continue the creation of quality beads.
